And what can a psychologist do for you?

When we find ourselves at an impasse in our lives, too overwhelmed to deal with our own problems, going to a psychologist is still seen as a last resort, the lifeline we cling to in order not to sink in the troubled waters of life’s torrent.

Gradually, the taboos surrounding psychotherapy are disappearing, and more and more people are taking heart and opening their hearts to address the traumas and problems that plague them with a psychotherapist.

I am Mihaela Thuring, a clinical psychologist recognized in Belgium and Romania, and through this website I want to bring psychology and psychotherapy closer to those who would greatly benefit from it, and to facilitate the access to it.

How does psychotherapy helps people understand that they can do something to improve their situation?

Psychological support

Currently one in six to ten people are affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives. The professional support and specialized interventions are recommended for dealing in a more effective way with the psychological problems. A comprehensive assessment and flexible treatment plan are important to successful recovery.

Problem formulation

Dealing with mental disorders can be extremely difficult and painful. A first step in addressing the problem is what is called problem formulation, which is not the same as diagnosis, used in medical practice. Problem formulation identifies symptoms, predisposing and maintaining factors, triggering events, but also resources, and protective factors. This brings the whole process closer to the client, normalising their experience, increasing engagement and reducing the stigma associated with mental disorders.


I lost count how may times I heard, when explaining about a specific psychological mechanism that “we should have learned this at school” or “if I knew this I would have done things so differently”. Sometimes bringing back balance in life is just a matter of understanding the functioning of our mind.

How long should psychotherapy take?

How long psychotherapy takes depends on several factors: the type of problem or disorder, the patient’s characteristics and history, the patient’s goals, what’s going on in the patient’s life outside psychotherapy, and how fast the patient is able to make progress.
